In the 1960s and 1970s, artistic research in the United States turned on a critical analysis of consumerism and industrial production. Pop Art and Minimalism addressed these issues, albeit with different modes of expression, but Richard Artschwager’s work is notable for its subversive approach to these languages and aesthetic strategies. The use of materials never used previously in art—including Formica, Celotex fiberboard, rubberized horsehair, acrylic bristles and sandpaper—draws attention to everyday objects.
